Power In The People Not The Party

As I watched the convention coverage with my wife I couldn't help but think that a large amount of time is wasted and money spent. I understand that it's a step in the larger process but I think that it mostly provides ammunition for the other side. Sure it helps to rally and excite the public with the hope that they will spread the word and find more votes but it seems a bit silly knowing that these are the folks who already want to give you their vote. The media following this convention seems to focus on how successful the convention was with people who already supported! I have never really given the convention much of my time and as I watched the most recent one I remember a time when I was a whole lot younger and I was fortunate enough to spend some time with my grandfather. My grandfather took me to the barbershop and as I sat there with all the adult men and listened to their conversation about the local politics and upcoming elections the subject of all their focus and exciting new words I was learning walked right in. He wasn't there for a cut but he was there because of the potential votes and the need to gain more support based on issues. He sat there and talked with the adults and allowed them all to voice concerns and issues that meant something to each of them and responded. I don't think he won a whole lots of votes in the barbershop but he did earn respect and gained a better understanding of the needs of the people who were affected most by the choices that politicians make.
I have never really thought about that experience until watching this convention and I think a politicians time could be better spent in the streets with the people. I know one man could never speak with everyone but the power of the people is with the people so if one were to put him/herself in direct contact with the people I think these people would be a better ally for their cause than the ones at the big party!

I'm Back!

Lately life has kept me busy and unable to post but as the elections begin to heat up I'm realizing that life is much bigger than what I do every day. I might not change the world but if my life prevents me from posting it should also be the reason why I post! I'm recommitting to my idea of sharing some common sense thoughts and maybe some brilliant ideas and I hope somebody in America will read and perhaps think about their choices and decisions.
